Writing a cover letter that leaves an excellent first impression on potential employers will increase your chances of landing an interview. The cover letter should highlight your experience, but you should not copy and paste your resume.

The cover letter should help you stand out and give you the option to express why you are interested in the position. You can also show your knowledge about the company and tell them about your experience and how it can be beneficial for them.

Every cover letter should be structured as the look of it can say a lot about you.

You should start with a Header

This should be the same as in your resume. You should include your name, job title, phone number, and email.

Address the Reader

As in a normal letter, you should address the reader. Write the location and date. Hiring manager’s name, job title, company name, and company address.

Intro paragraph

The first paragraph should grab the attention of the reader. You could open with a unique line. It can be a citation from someone from the industry or your life motto. Then, you should discuss your motivations for applying for the job and why you would be a good fit for the organization.

Body paragraph

Here you should highlight your skills and experiences. You can add situations when your skills were useful and also explain how these experiences can be used in this job position. Don’t be afraid to mention any accomplishments, awards, or things you are proud of.

Closing paragraph

Summarize why you are interested in this position, why you would be a good fit, and why are you passionate about this. If you will get hired, what will be your impact.

End the letter with a call to action. Thank them for reading your cover letter, invite them to call you back, and express your excitement about a potential meeting.

The cover letter should be easy to read. Keep it simple. It should be one page and structure.
